Passenger Lists
.
These lists will be continually made available. Available lists are in blue - 'greyed out' dates indicate the list is not yet available via this website.  Please don't be disappointed if your list is not here - lists will be continually added.  Lists underlined indicate that you can download a .pdf from this site; if you have difficulty downloading them, please request by email.

Surname Search

The lists of surnames (see column at left) contain names for all the journeys marked in blue below, except for 29/09/1950 which will be added soon.  More lists will be uploaded and transcribed as they become available. If the name you are seeking is not here and you have an approximate date of arrival, use the Passenger Lists (see below) to try to locate it.

The Lists

The lists provide a fascinating insight into life in the first half of the 20th Century. "Profession, Occupation or Calling" records such occupations as "L/Col. Br Army India", "Linotype Operator", "Millwright", "Women's Land Army" and "Warp Knitter".

Deaths at sea are also recorded, with Miss Annie Boylan ("age 62, domestic, female") sadly passing away due to "heat stroke" on the voyage which landed in Fremantle on the 15th June 1947.

Information about date and place of arrival in Australia has mainly been taken from the records held by the National Archives of Australia.

It is not uncommon for these dates to be slightly inaccurate: obviously ships often arrived later, or even earlier, than scheduled and it appears that the records sometimes do not match the date of arrival on the Passenger List. Dates of arrival in Australia have been noted below; please let us know of any inaccuracies by sending an email.

Unfortunately some lists are barely legible; they are taken from rolls of microfilm held by the NAA, which seem to be the only records available to the public.

  • First, Second and Third Class passengers are listed separately;
  • Passengers who boarded at ports between the UK and Australia are also often listed separately (at the 'end' of the list);
  • The lists are not strictly alphabetical - some are listed by port of embarkation; a name you are seeking can be out of order;
  • Passengers who disembarked at Fremantle are sometimes on the Passenger List for "Passengers Brought to Melbourne";
  • Some lists contain passengers' occupation and others include their destination in Australia, including an address.

1The final page of this list is missing from the copy held by the National Archives (Vic branch)
2This list is missing at least one page towards the end - "Grade C Passengers" taken on board at Malta, and some names are illegible
3This comprises several lists for the same voyage.  Search for duplicated names as one list has extra information, such as age and place of destination in Victoria, for some passengers only.
